Hyundai and Kia have recalled 3.3 million vehicles due to a fire risk caused by potential problems with electronic modules. The recall affects 25 models from both brands, including the Elantra, Sonata, Santa Fe, and Sportage.

The specific problem is slightly different, depending on which brand you drive. For Hyundai vehicles, the issue is with the anti-lock brake module. For Kia vehicles, the issue is with the hydraulic electronic control unit.

In both cases, a brake fluid leak could cause an electrical short, which could lead to a fire. The fire could occur at any time, even when the vehicle is parked and turned off.

Hyundai and Kia are advising owners of affected vehicles to park outside until the issue can be addressed. The automakers will be sending out notifications to owners with instructions on how to schedule a repair appointment.

Presently, the recall doesn’t extend beyond 2015 model-year vehicles, save for a few exceptions from Kia. Here’s a complete list of all models from Hyundai and Kia included in the recall:

Implications for users

If you own a Hyundai or Kia vehicle that is affected by this recall, it is important to take action to protect yourself and your vehicle. Here are some tips:

  • Park your vehicle outside until the issue has been repaired.
  • Contact your local Hyundai or Kia dealer to schedule a repair appointment.
  • In the meantime, be aware of the signs of a fire, such as smoke, burning smells, or melted components. If you notice any of these signs, exit the vehicle immediately and call the fire department.

You can also check to see if your vehicle is affected by the recall by visiting the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website and entering your VIN.
